Ceremony on USS Missouri commemorates end of WWII, celebrates 442nd soldiers

September 3, 2018 PEARL HARBOR (HawaiiNewsNow) A ceremony to commemorate the end of World War II took place Sunday at the site where it all happened: on the deck of the Battleship Missouri Memorial. Seventy-three years ago, Imperial Japan formally surrendered to the Allied forces on the deck of the Mighty Mo. “On that day, the USS Missouri truly became an altar of peace upon which the U.S. and Japan formed an unbreakable alliance that holds to today,” said Gov. David Ige, who was among those who attended. The ceremony also commemorated the establishment of the most decorated unit in American warfare history: The 442nd Regimental Combat Team, known for the motto “go for broke.”

Ige added, “Upon their return home, President Truman told the 442nd, ‘You fought the enemy abroad and prejudice at home and you won.’” Kenji Ego, who served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, also attended the ceremony. “I think what many of us wanted to prove was to prove to assert our loyalty to our country the United States of America,” Ego said. More than 2,000 sailors witnessed the formal surrender by Japan on the deck of the Missouri in 1945.
